Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving means free food, which is spectacular. And if that’s all it involved, I would be happy! But NO, holidays surrounding food must be ruined by shoving socialization into the mix.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I can socialize. I just choose not to, because it’s draining and I have to act like I care. We have to go over to my grandma’s house later today for a great big Thanksgiving get-together. I’m going to have to smile and nod and engage in trivial conversations.

At least there’s going to be food.

I guess Thanksgiving is about, in part, being thankful. So I’m going to make a not-very-heartfelt list of things I’m thankful for. :)

  • Music
  • Bread and jelly
  • People that make me feel like I’m wanted
  • Cool blogger friends
  • Hoodies (I just got a new one, YAYYYY)
  • The colors black and gray
  • Plane tickets to Florida are only fifty something dollars
  • Internet
  • Books
  • Bonfires
  • Forests
  • Stars

It got a little more sincere at the end.

Also: yes, I did take the picture at the beginning. And yes, I like it a lot.

NANO UPDATE: I’ve only got 1k left to go!

NaNo Update

Hey, guys! Just thought I’d update you on how NaNo is going so far.

Did you know that pretty much every Twenty One Pilots album makes great novelling music? Because I did.

I have fleshed out my characters (mostly).

This is a list of the major plot points of my novel. :)

Navi likes helping me. She sleeps beside me while I write. She also ate my old earbuds, so idk.

It might not seem like that much, but it is to me. I haven’t gotten writer’s block yet or anything, which is a big improvement from last year’s NaNoWriMo. ;)

Also, I kind of entered the wrong birth date while registering on the YWP site, so I will not be able to post on the forums till early next year. :P Oops?

Speaking of posting, I probably won’t be very active on either of my blogs this month. Just a warning.

On a completely random side note, if you right-click a Youtube, you will find “stats for nerds.” Which I think is hilarious.

NaNoWriMo Prep

NaNoWriMo Banner

With NaNoWriMo 2016 starting in just over a week, now is the time to panic!

Whenever I have a bad day, I just remember that someone cosplayed the wacky waving inflatable tube man.

Now then. I’ll be making a list of some things you should do before November 1st.

Buy Dark Chocolate

I don’t care if you like dark chocolate or not, it is necessary for your survival. Eat so many pieces of chocolate once you reach your daily wordcount goal — or you could eat while writing, too.

Most Glorious notebooks

I don’t know about you, but having a pretty notebook dedicated solely to my story is really helpful. Once you pick a notebook, carry it with you everywhere! You never know when inspiration will strike.

Plot, plot, plot!

Even if you’re a pantster, it’s nice to have at least a vague idea of where your novel is going. I did a post about how to make a plot board last year — check it out here.

Develop Your Characters

No one wants to read about another Mary Sue. Try to make you characters as lifelike as possible, which means they need flaws, fears, and dreams. Character questionnaires are a great way to make realistic characters. In the Resources section of the new YWP website, you can access the Novelist Workbooks. Pages 12 – 14 of the high school workbook has a nice questionnaire.

Shout it out

Announcing that you’re participating in NaNoWriMo does wonders for your confidence and motivation, especially if you have writer friends that will cheer you on. Make a post about your novel, and give updates throughout the month.

Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? What is your novel about? And what would you add to this post?

CWWC 2016: Teams + Challenge #1

Hello! Welcome to the first day of Creating Worlds Writing Camp 2016. :D I’m sorry this is late — I was at a friend’s house all day and just got home. I’ve been working on this post since I got into the house, and it’s finally ready!

First, here are the teams:

DragonsMystery Class logo source

KeepersBlack Swan logo source

Half-BloodTrident image source

The teams are perfectly even: ten on each, so forty participants total! Can you believe that?! I certainly can’t. Make sure to say hello to your teammates in the comments!

If you signed up, but don’t see your name anywhere on the list, tell me in the comments and I’ll fix that.

Alright. Here are your prompts:

#writing #prompt:

Write a story (or poem) inspired by the prompts. I’ll give you two points just for turning in a story, and one point for every prompt you weave into it. So, if you work all three prompts into your story, you’ll get five points total.

Your stories are due by midnight on May 4th.

Once you’ve finished your story, either comment on this post with a link or email it to me at happyhouseofag@gmail.com.

Get writing! :D

Sign Up for Creating Worlds Writing Camp 2016!

I’m super happy to announce that I’m hosting Creating Worlds Writing Camp again! You guys loved it so much last time that I just had to do it again. :)

What is it?

Creating Worlds Writing Camp — CWWC for short — is an online writing camp that will span the entire month of May.

How Does it Work?

Every three days, I’ll post three writing prompts — a mix between dialogue prompts and picture prompts . You will then be asked to write a story based on the prompt(s) provided. It doesn’t even have to be a full story. You could write the first few paragraphs, a prologue, a poem, whatever floats your boat.

what’s the goal?

The goal is to grow as a writer, but also to help your team win!

Wait . . . what’s a team?

There are four teams: Team Keepers (Keepers of the Lost Cities), Team Half-Blood (Percy Jackson), Team Dragon (HTTYD), and Team Narnia. All participants will be sorted into a team.

I’d Like to participate, But I don’t have a blog . . .

You can take part in CWWC, even if you don’t have a blog. You’ll just need to email your stories to me instead of posting them. My email address is happyhouseofag@gmail.com

Any rules?

Please don’t put profanity, witchcraft, or too much gore into your CWWC stories. While I don’t care what you write about for yourself, those topics wouldn’t be appropriate for this challenge.

Ready to Sign up?

In order to participate in CWWC, follow these simple steps:

  • Comment on this post with your name and blog URL.
  • Tell me which team you would like to be on: Team Keeper, Team Dragon, Team Narnia, or Team Half-Blood. Make sure to give me your second choice, too, as I might not be able to get you onto your preferred team.

It’s really that easy! I hope to see many writers sign up. :) I’d really love it if you told your blogging friends about this challenge.

Make sure to sign up by midnight on April 30th!

Happy New Year!

HAPPY 2016!!!!

*blows horn thingy* *throws streams and balloons*

A day late, but whatever. It couldn’t be helped.

Did you do anything fun for New Years? I went up to D.C. with my dad. :)

I wanted to share some fun blog stats to celebrate Blue Eyes, Gray Eyes’s progress during 2015.

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 11,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
